UCSD Division of Dermatology - Procedural Dermatology Fellowship

UCSD Division of Dermatology
Procedural Dermatology/Mohs Surgery Fellowship

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Procedural Dermatology/Mohs Surgery Fellowship consists of a one-year training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). Under the direction of S. Brian Jiang, MD, FACMS, Procedural Dermatology/Mohs Surgery Fellowship Program Director, the fellow will obtain ACGME and ACMS certification. The curriculum emphasizes comprehensive clinical training in cutaneous surgery and oncology.

The fellow will participate in all of dermatologic surgery unit activities located at Perlman Ambulatory Clinic in La Jolla (a brand new state-of-the-art facility in La Jolla will replace the current facilities by fall of 2011). These include Mohs micrographic surgery, reconstructive surgery, dermatologic laser surgery, dermabrasion, sclerotherapy, scar revision, chemical denervation, filler materials and other procedures such as destructions, biopsies, cryotherapy, excisions and nail surgery. The fellow will also have the opportunity to train with the Mohs Surgeons at the La Jolla and Oceanside VAMC (Marian McDonald, MD and Kiko Gladsjo, MD/PhD - a former fellow of our program). The fellow will also have close interaction with the director of our dermatopathology, Robert Lee, MD/PhD. Additional training in laser surgery and cosmetic dermatologic procedures not performed at UCSD can be individually tailored to the interests of the incoming fellow with Mitchel Goldman, MD and other cosmetic oriented dermatologists.

There is significant interaction with other surgical specialties in the management of complicated skin cancers and the fellow will have an opportunity to collaborate with plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, and urologic surgery specialties. Surgical procedures under general anesthesia are performed in the operating rooms at Thornton Hospital or the University Ambulatory Surgery Center in La Jolla in conjunction with other services.

UCSD Dermatology has an active conference schedule which includes journal clubs, grand rounds, dermatopathology conferences, clinical conferences and basic science conferences. The fellow will have an opportunity to participate in relevant activities depending on clinical schedule.

The fellow will be actively involved in research projects during the year. These can be studies conducted within our surgical unit or in collaboration with our basic science faculty (under the direction of Richard Gallo, MD/PhD) or clinical trials unit (under the direction of Tissa Hata, MD).

Candidate Information & Requirements

Candidates considering a career in academic dermatology are strongly encouraged to apply. With the vision of training academic Mohs surgeons in mind, in addition to the ACGME and ACMS fellowship curriculum requirements, the fellow will be expected to initiate and complete a research project to be submitted for publication and presentation at a national meeting. The fellow will also be expected to be a role model to residents and instruct them in dermatologic surgery during the fellowship.

UCSD Procedural Dermatology Fellowship Program will participate in the San Francisco Match. For registration and complete information regarding the Procedural dermatology fellowship match go to the web sites for Mohs College and San Francisco match.
