UCSD Division of Dermatology Residency Training Program
UCSD Dermatologic and Mohs Surgery Fellowship
About the Program
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Dermatologic and Mohs Surgery Fellowship consists of a one-year training program accredited by the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). Under the direction of S. Brian Jiang, MD, FACMS, Mohs Fellowship Program Director, the fellow will obtain ACMS certification. The curriculum emphasizes comprehensive clinical training in cutaneous surgery and oncology. UCSD plans to seek approval to become a procedural dermatology fellowship under ACGME in the future.
The fellow will participate in all of the dermatologic surgery unit activities located at Perlman Ambulatory Clinic in La Jolla. These include Mohs micrographic surgery, reconstructive surgery, dermatologic laser surgery, dermabrasion, sclerotherapy, scar revision, filler materials and other procedures such as destructions, biopsies, cryotherapy, excisions and
nail surgery. Additional training in laser surgery and cosmetic dermatologic procedures not performed at UCSD can be individually tailored to the interests of the incoming fellow.
There is significant interaction with other surgical specialties in the management of complicated skin cancers and the fellow will have an opportunity to collaborate with the
plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, and urologic surgery specialities. Surgical procedures under general anesthesia are performed in the operating rooms at Thornton Hospital in La Jolla in conjuction with other services.
UCSD Dermatology has an active conference schedule which includes journal
clubs, grand rounds, dermatopathology conferences, clinical conferences and
basic science conferences. The fellow will have an opportunity to participate in relevant activities depending on clinical schedule.
Candidate Information & Requirements
Candidates considering a career in academic dermatology are strongly encouraged to apply. UCSD emphasizes multidisciplinary approach which is essential to the success of a Mohs surgeon in an academic environment. With the vision of training academic Mohs surgeons in mind, in addition to the ACMS fellowship curriculum requirements, the fellow will
be expected to initiate and complete a research project to be submitted for publication and presentation at a national meeting. The fellow will also be expected to be a role model to residents and instruct them in dermatologic surgery during the fellowship.
UCSD Dermatologic and Mohs Surgery Fellowship Progam is a member of the American College of Mohs Surgery. The Mohs Micrographic Surgery Fellowship match is administered by the San Francisco Match.
